Assignment 5.1 Understand the requirements of working to a brief

Structure Of Briefs

Introduction
In this assignment i am going to be briefly discussing about the different types of briefs and their purposes within the media industry as well as how key people and key organisations work whilst been given a specific brief.

Contractual Brief
A contractual brief is a legal guaranteed form normally to do with, employment, sales or tenancy between the employer and the employee. It usually outlines the duties and guidelines the employee must follow whilst on the job. It is very vital that the employee follows the expectations on the brief as he/she has signed before being employed. If the employee does breach the rules and regulations on the contract they are likely to get sacked and/or worse case scenario taken to court for their specific actions.

The positive thing about a contractual brief is that it sets goals and boundaries for the employee, for example, if the employee wants to be a school teacher there would be a code of conduct saying "you should not hit children" This makes it clear to the employee that he/she shouldn't do such an action as it is illegal and has the risk of losing his/her job and also taken to court.

A negative about contractual brief is the lack of freedom that the employee has. For example, an employee that has made a cake that he/she thinks has made to their best standard, the employer would tell them "it isn't near the store's expectation, go do it again!" This could be very frustrating for the employee as he hasn't got enough experience than the other employees that have been at the work placement for longer.

Formal Brief
A formal brief is more like a contractual brief yet it's a brief set for a company to follow. In a way it's telling the company what to do and then the company then abides by the commands and regulation via the brief. The reason why I say this is similar to contractual brief is because the company has been asked by the client to do a particular type of work that has been set out. Another difference between the contractual and formal brief is that it that the formal brief isn't always legal and the other has to be legal.

The positive thing about a formal brief is that it is clear, very easy to understand and there are not any needs of legal terms within the briefs. This influences the company to create what they've been told by the client without thinking about what the public would think, that's only for the client to sort out.

On the other hand, the negative thing about a formal brief is that the client could not like what the company has made even though the company has followed the structure on the brief and this could result to the company losing their own money through a 2nd production to please the client.

Informal Brief
Informal brief is a meeting that has been arranged by the client which he/she talks and goes through the plan/s along with the company listening to his/her requests. In other words, it is a brief that allows the client to take part of the making of an event, product, etc. alongside the people they have acquired. They are done face to face and is very open for the company's opinion on what the client wants to be produced.

The positive thing about an informal brief is that the company feels more relaxed as they are communicating through word of mouth which allows the company to even ask questions if they don't really understand what exactly is going on. This is an advantage because it means that production could be done quicker and also easier whilst the client is around the planning process.

A negative thing about the informal brief is that it is not done in professional style and are mostly unclear. Another disadvantage is the lack of written communication and this is dependent on the company to take notes whilst in the informal meeting before they forget vital information for the production process.

Negotiated Brief
A negotiated brief is a written document that could be negotiated between the client and the company depending on the request of both the client and company. Usually the company that have been issued with this type of brief could tell the client that they don't want to produce something in a way that the client has set it out and would prefer to do it in their own way which could make the job easier for the company. If the company is going to negotiate with the client, they are still going to have to stick to the guidelines of the brief whilst working their own way round.

The positive thing about a negotiated brief is that production companies that have been issued a slightly challenging task to accomplish can always find their way around it by making arrangements with the client. This advantage can lead to a product/organisation being formed without difficulties or a production company having to put a lot of money to produce what & how the client exactly wants it.

The negative about a negotiated brief is that a major problem could overcome the production company and they will try to overcome this by negotiating with the client, but the client can not allow a lot to change from the brief as it needs to stick by its guidelines. A negative for the production company is that they would have to put a lot of hard work and money to produce what the client exactly wants. A negative for the client is that the production company could take even longer to produce the product or could even produce it at a lower quality than expected.

Cooperate Brief
A cooperate brief is a brief that is given to more than one company where they would work together amongst the client's request. Once the 2 or more companies receive the brief, they would then need to focus on the way they are going to produce the client's request together and at the quality that the client wants it at.

The positive thing about a Cooperate Brief is that there is more than one company working together so there would be more ideas being contributed to help the process of the client's request to be done quicker.

On the other hand, this type of brief is a disadvantage because it can cause disagreements between the 2+ companies which would make it even harder for both companies to decide which quality would satisfy the client's needs.

Evaluation

My final production resulted to something different to what I had planned. The order of shots and scenes were placed in a different order opposing to the suggesting storyboard. This was mainly because one of the actors was not able to make it in on the desired shooting day and it lead to me making a few last minute arrangements. The beginning of my project was to start with a flashback scene of me mixing songs as it shows what I do in my free time. The reason why I couldn't film it and include it in my video was because I didn't have a tripod at the time to place behind me and capture me actually mixing the songs in real time. As this was a problem, I decided to make an introduction with myself rapping a part of my song to the camera in selfie-mode. Despite the fact that I had to rearrange a few scenes and include new ones, the whole production didn't come out badder than I thought. I managed to fit in close-ups, mid-range shots and also a established shots too. Establish...

Evaluation

1. I think my audience's expectation would be something that catches their attention to the eye. They would expect to see a plot that encourages adrenaline which would spark the "action" to progress in the film. Commonly in an action films my audience would love to see popular stars name on the billing block before they watch the movie because it gives them a brief idea of how this movie could be like if they watch it. For example, they would base my movie on the way that actor has given a certain amount of energy to previous movies and it would encourage/discourage the audience to watch my film. In addition to that, I have included a lot of big stars to my movie so i have no doubt that my audience would be discouraged to watch my film. 2. The emotional response i would love to receive from my target audience is excitement because my movie will contain "ooh ahh" scenes and unrealistic events happening but at the same time i wouldn't want to encourage my vie...

Single Camera Production Assignment

Introduction Single camera production is the use of one camera within the media production, whether it be a music video, short film or even a movie. Single camera production also tends to use different camera angles and often requires a lot of editing after shooting. Single camera production is commonly associated with low budget films & film companies as they haven't got sufficient funding to purchase many high quality cameras for a film production. Advantages & Disadvantages Of Single Camera Production The advantages of a single camera production is that it makes the viewer feel like they are in the scene with one continuos shot. This encourages the viewer to feel more emotions than a film with more than one camera because the use of one camera establishes that the viewer is at the exact scene in real time. Another advantage is that it is cheap, this is good for low budget film producers as they don't have as much money to purchase more than one camera. Consideri...
