Cadbury dairy milk advert (featuring. Phil Collins & Gorilla)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnzFRV1LwIo
This advert has been around for ages and i find it memorable by the song & the gorilla that is playing the drums in the background. The song is composed and written by Phil Collins and the tracking title is called "In The Air Tonight". This advert also advertises the famous Cadbury Milk chocolate, but the funny thing is the chocolate wasn't shown whilst the gorilla was playing on the drums… The only time the chocolate was shown was at the end of the advert. From this sort of format the company decided to use the gorilla to catch our attention and then stick on the main bit of advertising at the end with the chocolate to give us the understanding of the whole advert.
The target audience would be to kids and adults from all ages, from 3 years of age by the way, because everybody loves chocolate, and you could use chocolate for almost anything to be honest. It could also get "soft rock" lovers attention as that is the genre of 'Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight' and the people who love this tune would be hooked on to the advert until they see the main purpose of the advert. In the advert as well, i have noticed that the room that the Gorilla is playing the drums in has a purple background, which represents the colour of the wrapper that Cadbury uses. This colour indicates independence, creativity & luxury. Cadbury is independent because they are not in partnership with any other chocolate brand, they are also creative because they have a range of variety of flavours and they want us to experience the creativity they have. Last of all the luxury. Cadbury has been around for 192 years and has been making quality chocolate since beating all it's rivals in the UK of course.
Moving onto the features that this advert has is that it is shot in a realist form meaning that the gorilla that is playing the drums isn't really a real gorilla... A man is in a gorilla costume playing the drums which makes it a realist advert. In the video the advert is shot in a purple room and purple is a dim colour which represents a cold setting which relates to the song "in the air tonight" which is a soft rock about Phil Collins losing his ex wife at the time. So therefore Cadbury could be implying to customers that without their chocolate they would feel like crap.
Camera Shots:
- Extreme Close Up
This shot is associated with getting an extra close up view of an object, either emotion or to get a clearer of view of the image. In this shot whilst the ad was playing, the gorillas nostrils were flaring, this could mean that the gorilla is in his feelings.
Close Up
Here the camera shot is showing the full face of the gorilla and this is to show how the gorilla is feeling and how his emotions are being expressed. You can easily tell that the Gorilla is not in a happy mood at all as you can see he has got his lips pinned together meaning that he is upset or he has something stuck on his mind.
Mid Shot
The camera shot shows more than just the gorillas face, it also shows the body language too to show how the gorilla is feeling, and as we can see he is slouched slightly. This is useful in adverts because it helps the audience see what is going on and what is suppose to be in the shot for the add to be relevant.
Long Shot
This show more than the gorilla's expression and feelings, but it also showed the atmosphere and what he was doing as you could see drums in the background with speakers. But the most important shot is the purple background and this is important because the chocolate candy bar is represented by this colour. in all shots from above, you could clearly see purple but until the long shot come in, it's more obvious and catches the audiences attention.
Coca-Cola Advert (Polar Bear 2013)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8-Mr1Vf2iw
The form of this advert is an animation form and it has a family of polar bears together in the south pole having fun. The story of the advert is that the polar bears are making a snowman together and when they finish doing that they realise that something is missing. So they found out it was the nose and they replaced it with a coca cola lid. Here the company could be implying to the viewers of the advert that when something is missing it could be replaced with their very own brand. The style of the advert is surreal because of the fact that there polar bears holding on to a coke bottle in the
advert and they move differently to the way the real ones do in the real world. The target audience for this advertisement would be aimed at families because of the number of polar bears grouped together, which falls into mis-en-scene. The bears are in a cold climate but when they are together the lighting and the mood is warm. This is also accompanied by the music, classical and calm. At 0.13 there is a point where the music comes to a halt and the silence is placed with a quite eerie draft of air. This shows that something isn't right at that specific moment in the advertisement, but then the music resumes as the little polar bear makes a suggestion to put the lid on the snowman for it's nose. The camera shots in the advertisement were smooth fast cuts, which allowed the advertisement to flow steadily and calm. The form of this advert is an animation form and it has a family of polar bears together in the south pole having fun. In the picture at the top, you can clearly see the mix of colours from warm to cold. The blue colour indicating the chilly atmosphere and the yellow colour indicating warmth as the polar bears are together. Mis-en-scene, you can see the mountains in the background which gives you a clear idea of where somebody is, and also the white background, there's only one place that is constantly full of snow with polar bears, and that's Antarctica.
In this screenshot the camera shot that was used was a long shot and this was used to get the landscape, family moment & most of all the main part of the advertisement, the trademark. Just by looking at this shot you can see the coke bottle stand out in the whitey-bluish background. The company probably chose cold colours so that they could make the coke bottles look more appealing than anything else in the advert.
The music that was being played during the ad was a calm classical piece by Edvard Grieg and this helped the advert to be calmer than it actually is.
This camera shot used is called a close up and it enables us to see how the polar bears are feeling and creates a certain mood for the viewers of the advertisement. In this still image shows two polar bears looking rather surprised at what is happening between the other polar bears, the bear to the left looks more surprised than the one to the right whom is just glancing at what is going on.
Coming to the end of the advertisement and the polar bears are united and sat together as a family, the camera shot used is a long shot and this allows us to view the yellowy glow shown on the polar bears' bodies. The use of the yellowy colour shows that the sun is shining which also represents the atmosphere they are in reflecting on their emotion/mood. The use of the warm yellow colour shows that the bears are a positive family.
The selling technique used in this advert is creating emotional response and creating a memory for the product. The reason for this is because the polar bears were sat down together as a family and it enables the viewer of the advertisement see how it is and feels like to get along in a family and it would make the viewer feel sympathetic and some emotionally happy or distressed, on the other hand, this advert is creating a memory for the product because polar bears can't actually make snowmen or even hold on a coke bottle and drink it. This makes it unique and unforgettable because people are watching polar bears do human-like activities.
Galaxy Chocolate (Duet)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7tRVb4ylJU
The form of this advert is realist as it uses two real life human beings in the studio with one rapping and the other one singing. The moral of the advert is basically pitching that two different flavours can perfectly go together, which is linked with the rapping and the singing in the advert. The target audience for this advertisement is mainly for everyone (specially young people) as there's two young 20 year olds advertising the product. Chocolate is also loved more by the younger generation than the older generation and the use of using young artists for this advertisement is really good and accurate meaning that young people are more likely to purchase their products. The two different flavours that have been mixed with this chocolate are cookies & cream, but it hasn't been mixed entirely together as shown below in the picture:
This sort of format of separation was shown whilst the two artists were performing too in the booth, they were both separated by a glass barrier whilst they did their two individual bits together. The company is basically implying that these two flavours doing their specific role side by side is a perfect mix instead of being jumbled up together already.
Long Shot:
This shot was used to give the viewers of the advertisement a clearer idea of where it was set and also how brightly lit the room looked. The same yellow colour presents the happiness shown in the advert and also engages the audience to feel positive about it too. Not only does the advertisement show scenery, but a song is being performed here and the tone of their voices are clear and happy. Here Galaxy could be implying to their fans that their product could put you in a good mood.
The style of this advert is drama and this means that this could happen in everyday life. Galaxy used a real life situation so that customers could purchase their product knowing that the product isn't fake or the scenario of the ad wasn't either. Celebrity endorsement was also used in the advert, with rapper Bxnjamin & singer Chanele McGuinness a possible reason why Galaxy decided to use celebrities instead of normal people is because they wanted it to sound professional so it gains the viewers attention. Talking about the use of celebrity endorsement, these celebrities are not worldwide known and this is not only a promotion for the Galaxy brand but it's a promotion for the celebrities used as they weren't known as much before but now they have been used for a product that is widely known nationwide and worldwide which could help them with their career later in the years prior to the advertisements release.
Close up of product: This shot was used to get a closer view of the product in real life, this shot and size was probably in use to get the "new" logo in there so that the viewers know that they are trying something new by the company Galaxy ™.
Whilst the pair are performing the camera isn't still at all. The camera is slowly panning from the start straight to the end. Whilst the camera pans it also cuts to the next scene with the same panning movement.
The lighting is bright and warmed coloured which implies that the setting is friendly and also the song that the musicians perform is also a bright and jolly song and this is shown because throughout the advert the pair are smiling as they are working together in unison.
